How do we reconcile the tensions between public queerness and safety, between complicity and identity, between professional ambition and the pressures of "selling out"?

In this talk, Professor Joseph Fischel will explore the intersections of sexual politics, law, and queer life, drawing from his forthcoming book on sodomy law in Louisiana. He will examine the false binaries that shape contemporary debates—such as the opposition between concerns about sexual harassment and the visibility of kink at Pride—and challenge the idea that queerness must conform to respectability to survive in professional spaces. Reflecting on the challenges of corporate assimilation and the burdens often placed on trans and queer professionals, Professor Fischel will offer a candid and thought-provoking discussion on flourishing within contradiction.

Professor Fischel is an Associate Professor of Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Yale University. Read more about his background here.
