Hi All –

We hope you had a great weekend! Thank you to all those who came out to our kick-off meeting! We’re really excited about everyone’s interest in the club.

There are several announcements this week so please make sure to read carefully:

LATINX HERITAGE MONTH KICKOFF  TALK – Sept 16
Please join La Casa Cultural and the Yale Divinity School, in partnership with the Center for the Study of Race, Indigeneity, and Transnational Migration at 6 pm on Friday September 16 for the kickoff of Latinx Heritage Month

Dr. Eduardo Bonilla-Silva, Professor of Sociology at Duke University, renowned race scholar, and the first Afro-Latino to be elected President of the American Sociological Association, will present a lecture, The Diversity Blues at HWCUs: Reframing the Diversity Agenda at Colleges and Universities.

Dr. Bonilla-Silva has published and spoken widely on racial theory, color-blind racism, the idea that race stratification in the USA is becoming Latin America-like, racial grammar, HWCUs, race and human rights, race and citizenship, whiteness, and the Obama phenomenon. He says, “In all my work, I contend that racism is fundamentally about ‘racial domination,’ hence, racism is a collective and structural phenomenon in society.”

The lecture will be preceded by a showcase of La Casa’s student groups. A reception will follow. The evening’s events will take place at Yale Divinity School’s Marquand Chapel, 409 Prospect Street. The event is free and open to all of the Yale community.

SOM COMMUNITIES:
SOM Communities, the Yale SOM diversity event for perspective students, is on September 22-23. We need AT LEAST 6 more hosts! If you are interested in hosting the night of the 22nd, please fill out this survey here.

Prospanica Conference in Houston – Sept 29- Oct 1:
Every year NSHMBA, the premier organization for Hispanic MBAs, organizes a conference and career expo. It’s a great place to network with Hispanic professionals and meet companies that don’t always recruit on campus. In the past several SOM Students have gotten jobs thanks to the career expo. For a list of companies attending please see: http://www.prospanicaconference.org/job-fair

We recommend you attend the Career Expo on 9/30-10/1 only. Please note that there is a special rate for students who become members of NSHMBA and attend the Expo only ($75+20 membership fee vs $150).
For rate info please see: http://www.prospanicaconference.org/pricing-1
And to become a member of NSHMBA please see: http://www.nshmba.org/?Membership_benefits

The sooner you register the better since there are companies who have already posted jobs and are looking at resumes. Next week, we’ll be sending out a google doc so SOM students who have signed up can share their contact info with each other. This comes in handy when trying to coordinate carpools to the airport or sharing hotel rooms. If you have any questions please contact Perla (Perla.Jimenez@yale.edu)
