Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Join the Yale and New Haven communities for the 2026 Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemoration, an evening dedicated to honoring Dr. King’s life, vision, and enduring challenge to pursue justice through shared understanding and service.   

This year’s keynote speaker, U.S. Army Col. (Ret.) Edna W. Cummings, is a distinguished veteran, advocate, and storyteller whose leadership has helped ensure that the contributions of underrecognized heroes are preserved in our national memory. Col. Cummings was instrumental in securing long-overdue recognition for the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion (the “Six Triple Eight”)—the first all-Black, all-woman battalion deployed overseas during World War II. Her efforts, including work on the film The Six Triple Eight and advocacy leading to the battalion’s 2022 Congressional Gold Medal, have expanded public understanding of service, equity, and community in American history.   

A trailblazer in her own right, Col. Cummings was the first African American woman commissioned through Appalachian State University’s ROTC program and went on to a 25-year military career with leadership posts including Georgetown University ROTC, the Pentagon, and U.S. NORAD/NORTHCOM. She currently serves as the Army Reserve Ambassador for Maryland, continuing to champion opportunity and representation within and beyond the armed forces. 

Following her keynote, Col. Cummings will be joined in conversation by Babz Rawls-Ivy, New Haven radio host (LoveBabz LoveTALK), journalist, and community leader, for a discussion on how we “repair the record and build belonging” by bringing untold stories to light and fostering genuine community across generations.   

Together, we’ll reflect on Dr. King’s enduring call to confront injustice and imagine a more just and compassionate society. All are welcome — students, faculty, staff, neighbors, and friends — to share in an evening of inspiration, dialogue, and celebration.
