The goal of the talk is to inform the Yale community of the severity of the Uyghur genocide now in its 8th year. In 2017 the Xinjiang regional legislature legalized the mass internment of Uyghurs and other Muslim peoples. Satellite images showed a massive construction campaign to house over a million ordinary citizens. These facilities have been linked to forced labor abuses. The Western democracies, after careful deliberation, have labeled the actions of the Chinese state a genocide. In 2022 The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights issued a scathing report of human rights abuses that included the assessment that crimes against humanity may have occurred. Our speaker is Dr. William Clark, an anthropologist who has lived and worked in the Uyghur region for seven years. He will highlight personal narratives of Uyghur community leaders who have been incarcerated over these past years. Please join us for this dinner event in order to learn more.
