  • Movement for Emotional Resilience in Climate Crisis, 11/4-12/8

The Movement for Emotional Resilience in Climate Crisis (MERCC) facilitates healing spaces and skill-building sessions for individuals and communities experiencing eco-anxiety and/or emotional distress produced by environmental change. MERCC's mission is to craft an emotionally resilient community of climate activists, environmentalists, and earth-minded citizens through social healing, connection, and individualized contemplative practices. Building the Carbon Positive City at the Yale Forest Forum on Thursday, November 11, 2021 - 11:30am

The contemporary mid- and high-rise city is built with mineral-based materials that have been extracted, smelted, sintered, or synthesized through intensive fossil-energy based industrial processes with significant environmental impact. Regional as well as global trends in urban growth suggest that the demands for these materials and processes will rise sharply over the next 30 – 50 years, setting the stage for a significant spike in greenhouse gas emissions associated with the demand for new buildings and infrastructure. Potential ecological and economic synergies between continental forests and rapidly urbanizing landscapes suggest an alternative: the transformation of dense urban centers into massive carbon sinks, made possible through the broad implementation of a host of new and emerging mass timber construction and biomass-based material technologies.
