Happy December!

We hope everyone has had a good Thanksgiving break and is ready for the final sprint of the semester.  We’ve held two great events this month:

  • Forestside Chat #2: We hosted our second in a series of “Forestside Chats”! This iteration focused on the environmental/climate policies of the outgoing Trump and incoming Biden administrations. If you’d like to see the articles we discussed during the session, check out the CampusGroups posting here

  • Climate Change & Sustainability: Public and Private Sector Perspectives: We had the privilege to host panelists Arjun Nath (Expert Project Leader at BCG) and Joseph Robertson (Global Strategy Director at Citizens' Climate Lobby and Director of Food System Economics Commission) as we explored the landscape view on topics of climate advocacy, carbon pricing and climate finance.

Read on for events, job postings, and what we've been up to.  If you have anything you would like highlighted in upcoming B&E newsletters and events, feel free to chat with us in our #businessandtheenvironment Slack channel or send us an email!

Also Happening At Yale
  • December 11th, 10 am EST: YSE: Energy SIG - Summer Experience Showcase & Leadership Transition Meeting -- In response to the continued increase in national and global attention on energy issues, the YSE Energy SIG has become the fastest growing student group at YSE. We work on a variety of fronts to increase opportunities and knowledge within the energy sector at Yale. Our activities include hosting guest speakers, running workshops, organizing field trips, and providing networking opportunities for students focused on the nexus between energy, business, and the environment. In addition, we are working closely alongside faculty to expand the number of energy-focused course offerings at YSE and to bring in experienced industry professionals as guest lecturers. Access the event here.

Larger Community Events
  • December 15th, 2 pm EST: DBL Partners - Forest Innovation Virtual Roundtable -- The participant discussion will be anchored on DBL’s forthcoming white paper Forests of Innovation: Models for Reimagining the Future of Forests by Vincent Caruso, Lisa Hagerman, and Nancy Pfund. The white paper examines how the practices of forest restoration, reforestation, and conservation can be combined with innovative business models and technology to create investible opportunities that address climate change. As leaders across every sector work on solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and sequester carbon, evidence suggests that forests and natural climate solutions will play a central role. DBL’s forthcoming white paper highlights examples in which entrepreneurship, private investment, and cross-sector collaboration are being harnessed to deliver commercially viable innovation together with measurable benefits for local communities and forest ecosystems. The examples profiled in the white paper cover a range of sectors and business models including forest management, ‘forest-based services’ (death care/legacy care, recreation, carbon markets) and forest products. • December 17th, 12 pm EST: Nature-Based Solutions: A Fundamental Strategy for Tackling Climate Change -- Join TNC in Massachusetts’ Alison Bowden, conservation director of rivers, coasts and oceans, and Sara Burns, a water resource scientist, for a conversation about nature-based solutions. In this Nature Connects webinar, Alison and Sara will discuss the types of nature-based solutions we’re working to implement and why they’re an important strategy for tackling climate change. You’ll hear about recent local projects and how we can make nature-based solutions a scalable strategy for the future. Register here.
  • December 17th, 3 pm EST: Responses to the Climate Crisis from Cuba & Puerto Rico Session 3: Agrifood Systems -- Through this conference series, we will bring together academics, farmers, activists, citizens, and government officials to engage in discussion on environmental history and justice, agroecology and food systems, coastal resilience, immigration, public health, and energy.  We aim to explore how Puerto Rico and Cuba are responding to the climate crisis from a variety of angles.  We hope to better understand similarities and differences in approaches.  We will engage in a dialogue on the lessons we can learn from each other.  All sessions will be held in Spanish with interpretation to English. Register here.
