Hudson Yards: Reinventing the Heart of New York City Panel Event
 
Are you interested in learning how the largest private real estate development in the history of the United States was made possible? If so, please join us for an intimate discussion led by the innovators at the center of the project – Hudson Yards in NYC.
 
On April 19th, The Yale Real Estate Club will be hosting a panel on Hudson Yards, the largest urban regeneration and economic development project in the world. The project, which is roughly equal to six Empire State Buildings in size, will not only change the city skyline but also reposition the city center to the west side of Manhattan.  
 
The project is primarily a joint-venture between Related Companies, Oxford Properties, and New York City.  From financing and rezoning to building stakeholder engagement and structuring a successful partnership, we will explore the challenges and possibilities of implementing a project on a massive scale.

Speakers:  
 
Michael Samuelian: Michael M. Samuelian is Vice President with Related Companies, where his work focuses on the design of large-scale, public-private development projects. Mr. Samuelian is responsible for the urban planning, design management and public approvals of the Hudson Yards Project, a $20 billion master plan for 17 million square feet of mixed-use development on Manhattan’s West Side. Prior to joining Related, Mr. Samuelian was the Director of Lower Manhattan Special Projects at the New York City Department of City Planning, helping the city's efforts to redevelop downtown post-9/11. Mr. Samuelian is an architect, urban designer and urban planner.
 
Frank Ruchala Jr: Frank Ruchala Jr is the Deputy Director for Zoning at the NYC Department of City Planning. He is currently overseeing the implementation of the City’s tax amendments relating to housing that were identified in the administration’s Housing New York plan. Previous to this, he worked as an associate urban planner and designer in the agency’s Manhattan Office where he was responsible for projects in Midtown and Hudson Yards. Outside of the agency, he has been a faculty member at Columbia’s urban design program, and has had design competition and research work exhibited and published internationally. Frank holds masters degrees in urban planning and architecture from Harvard’s Graduate School of Design and a bachelor in urban studies from Rutgers University.
 
Dean Shapiro: Dean joined Oxford Properties Group as a senior vice president. Deans works closely with The Related Companies to lead in-house commercial leasing and marketing efforts for the 26-acre proposed project.  Shapiro was previously with Building and Land Technology in Stamford, CT as its chief operating officer, where he completed notable leases with Starwood Hotels. He also served as managing director at CB Richard Ellis. Shapiro received his MBA from Cornell University / London Business School and completed his undergraduate at Vanderbilt University.
